Pillette Road Bike Lanes

Spotlight on Infrastructure

This is the first in a series of posts to inform you of changes and improvements in cycling infrastructure. Over the past year, with the help of provincial grants, we have seen significant investment in bike lanes and trails. This Spotlight on Infrastructure series will bring you reviews, videos, stories and photos of cycling infrastructure throughout Windsor and Essex County.

NOTE: The new Provincial government has recently canceled the program of municipal grants that was helping to improve and expand cycling infrastructure.

PROJECT NAME – Pillette Road – Tecumseh Road E. to South National Street: Bike Lanes

Map Source: City of Windsor

This project added bike lanes to a busy section of Pillette Road, providing cyclists with increased safety along 8 blocks of this north/south corridor.  The bike lane proposal was not popular with some residents who argued against it at City Council.  Bike Windsor Essex provided Council with the benefits of the project.

“Several councillors tried to have the plan postponed until an ongoing transportation plan is complete in order to see how Pillette fits into the overall needs of the city. Several residents also argued to stop the addition of bike lanes in order to preserve parking along the road. But the call for improving safety for cyclists prevailed.”   CBC News, Aug 8, 2017
