Walkerville’s Bike Racing History

There are two things I’m passionate about- Windsor’s heritage and cycling. And the latest post over on Elaine Weeks’ blog, entitled Windsor Then Windsor Now, combines the two in a fantastic story relayed by Walkerville mainstay Charlie Fox.

In the story, Mr. Fox talks about his dad riding the annual Walkerville Bicycle Club’s 10 mile road race in 1896. It details the route and the prizes they won, and includes the most amazing photo of Mr. Fox’s father on his state-of-the-art road bike, along with the trophy he received for having the best overall time for the race. There’s also an image of the race’s program.

I love hearing/reading personal anecdotes about our heritage, and this one is my favourite so far, I think. Windsor has a superb bike racing culture, and now I know it’s roots! Check out the story here.
