Windsor Bicycling Committee recommends increase in bicycle infrastructure funding

Kari Gignac, the chair of the Windsor Bicycling Committee (and Bike Friendly Windsor Essex secretary) sat before Windsor City Council on Monday night asking for an increase for bicycle infrastructure funding. Her presentation, which was supported by Bike Friendly Windsor Essex along with Windsor’s East Side Riders and the Windsor Triathlon Club noted that the city’s own Bicycle Use Master Plan recommends $1,000,000 in capital funding annually as well as $250,000 in operational funding. She explained to council that funding has been kept at $200,000 for the last few years, and as low as $100,000 before being increased to $400,000 last year. She also noted that there is currently no money allocated in 2013-2014 for cycling infrastructure.

After the presentation, Councillor Alan Halberstadt made a motion to increase the funding by $50,000 but was defeated 8-2.
